Almost any email address is available 'trawled' from websites whom you will have possibly contacted via a form or just plain email. Infected computers (Invariably PC's) with poor security levels are the common source of the distribution network.
Have you ever been 'listed' as subscribers on the internet? Lists can get stolen by employees (or hackers) who are able 'sell' your name amongst thousands of others. (This has happened to us and it is not that uncommon). As Spammers don't like to pay for anything - your email address may of been been used in a forum or 'trawled' from your own website. Beware 'Search engine' and even your email provider companies often do sell email addresses.
Even if 'Spam' is against European law, the internet is an international entity. It cannot be policed except in the country of origin. Many 'fringe' countries have no Laws on this and they can see 'no-problem' i.e. it does not affect them directly!.
Every web-site we design we encode your email to stop 'robots' from harvesting your email addresses from your website. Our own email address (below) is security encoded and decoded by your own browser. We also use a 'SERVER SIDED ' email programme filter (reduces the amount of spam to a trickle). Many companies think they can cope but I suspect that things will get A LOT WORSE before proper email tagging is accepted by many Internet Service providers.
